from The Voice of America
Mexican presidential candidate Roberto Madrazo has pledged to fight poverty as he formally registered his candidacy to recapture the presidency his party held for seven decades.
Mr. Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI said Sunday the presidency of Vicente Fox has failed to create the thousands of new jobs promised by Mr. Fox. Mr. Fox ended the dominance of the PRI when he won the presidency in 2000.
Mr. Madrazo is the former governor of the oil-rich Tabasco State
Mr. Madrazo trails front-runner Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City. Polls are divided over whether he or Energy Secretary Felipe Calderon is in second place.
The election is July 2.
