YOUTHS have been called upon to maximise the opportunities offered by education to fight poverty and want.
Governor of Niger state, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu made the appeal in a speech during the independence day celebration held at the 123 parade ground in Minna the state capital on Monday.
He said those who chickened out of school due to laziness were usually those who end up as miscreants and get themselves involved in anti social activities such as armed robbery, drug addiction, cultism and rape.
The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Women, Youth and Social Development, Mrs. Lami Makama warned that his administration would not tolerate any act of lawlessness as the long arm of the law would surely fall on perpetrators.
Dr Aliyu noted that "at 47 Nigeria has come of age, we are witnesses to the transformation that is taking place now that government policies and programmes have become people oriented."
He reiterated that his administration's main thrust was to carry everybody along irrespective of political, religious and ethnic background, while stressing that, "we will continue to demonstrate commitment towards the yearning and aspiration of our people by providing them with the dividends of democracy."
He then urged the people to give his administration the necessary support and cooperation to achieve its mission of becoming one of the top three leading economies in Nigeria before the year 2020.
