from the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation
A call is being made for an urgent meeting of Caribbean ministers of government to find solutions to the scourge of poverty.
It comes from government's advisor on poverty eradication and the millennium development goals, Hamilton Lashley. He believes ministers responsible for social development need to meet and formulate a coordinated approach to addressing the problem, given the varying levels of poverty throughout the region.
Mr. Lashley was speaking during a media briefing with several United Nations agencies and other non-governmental organisations, to announce plans to commemorate International Poverty Eradication Day on October 17th.
The activities organised include a concert with performances by UN Peace Ambassador Aja and other artistes.
In her address, the United Nations development programme's resident representative Dr. Rosina Wiltshire stressed that poverty does not have to be permanent condition.
