[United Arab Emirates] Poverty, luxurious lifestyle cause 60 pc of crimes in UAE

ABU DHABI- Poverty and luxurious lifestyle are behind 60 per cent of the crimes in the country, reveals a field study by a security expert.

The findings were the results of a field study conducted by the security expert Dr. Abdurrahman Nasir Alawi for his PHD thesis from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, as he reviewed the results of his study yesterday, which related to diversity of cultures and nationalities playing a major role in rising crime rates here in the country.

He called for new systems for visit visa issuance to limit crime rates in the country.

Dr. Abdurrahman was speaking at the grand hall at the Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police. The lecture was organized by the Research and Security Studies Centre in coordination with the General Quality Committee of Abu Dhabi Police.

The lecturer asserted that his field study on inmates of correctional and punitive facilities in the country showed that the primary motive for crimes was the economic factor, whether driven by poverty or desire for luxury.

Dr. Alawi also pointed that broken families, weak faith, and poor awareness about the hazards of drug crime are major reasons behind crimes in the country.

Dr. Abdurrahman made several recommendations such as fostering the values of solidarity among Muslims, and working in cooperation between families, schools, mosques, and Universities, to produce educated and enlightened youth who will abstain from wrong behaviour and not fall prey to crime.
