[Pakistan] Pak-Britain trade pact to help alleviate poverty: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesday signed a 10-year treaty with Britain, in the Prime Minister House which would accordingly help alleviate poverty in Pakistan, while giving a credible boost to the process of overall economic development of the country.

He said that due to effective and conducive economic policies of Pakistani government, the country is already surging ahead in terms of economic development.

Earlier, the PM met a delegation from the British based international financial organization DFID, and signed the treaty, for an aid package valued at UK 23.7 crore over a stipulated period of 10 years.

The British organization would finance Pakistan to a tune of UKL 236 million.

During the next three years, covering such vital aspects as alleviation of poverty , social development , empowerment and emancipation of women and population control measures. The organization would start with an initial tranche of 74 million pounds.

During the treaty-signing ceremony UK High Commissioner to Pakistan Mark Lyall Grant was also present.
