[Nigeria] LG spends N17m to fight poverty

Ikpoba-Okha Local Government in Edo State has distributed materials worth N17.1 million to boost its poverty alleviation programme.

The council on Thursday in Benin City distributed 40 motorcycles, 50 sets of hair-dressing equipment and 250 telephone sets.

It also gave a soft loan of N50,000 each to 40 women to enable them to go into petty trading.

The Chairman of the council, Mr. Sunday Ogbewe, said the items were distributed free of charge.

The council also inaugurated two electricity projects and 100 new market stalls.

The projects comprised the Umelu and Oba Adolor electricity projects costing N6.5 million, while the Ogiemwanbor market was completed at N5.5 million.

Mrs Eki Igbinedion, wife of the state governor, performed the inauguration.
