PROMOTION of seaweed cultivation is the only way to wipe out poverty from the district of Tirunelveli, Dr Sakthivel, President of Aquaculture Foundation of India, said last week, according to Newindpress.com.Addressing the gathering on the second day of the national seminar on Aquatic resources, Aqua culture and Aqua show, he reportedly said banks were ready to give loans up to Rs 1 lakh for sea weed cultivation without any collateral security and as there are around 100 species of sea weeds available in this belt, the people in the district can earn an income of Rs 10,000 per month through this.He also said that in a few months, people in the coastal areas of the district would be given training in seaweed cultivation, which can improve their standard of living.Speaking during the occasion, district collector Atul Anand said that care should be taken during fishing that fingerlings are not netted out and affected in any way as doing so would led to shrink in the gene pool.
He said there is a huge competition prevails among countries in developing new technologies so patenting was very important.Developing nations are patenting even small technologies so the aqua farmers in the nation must get the patent right immediately after developing new technologies or if after making some changes to existing technology.
