Nigeria: ANAN Commends Sokoto On Poverty Alleviation

The President of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) Prof. Edet Iwok has commended the Sokoto State Government for giving agricultural implements and loans to farmers, under its poverty alleviation scheme.

Prof. Iwok who made the commendation at the 2006 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MC-PD) recently in Sokoto, also lauded the state government for establishing 300 hectares plantation of gum Arabic for export.

The ANAN president also noted that the state government had done the electrification of towns and villages and had provided portable drinking water to many rural communities.

He stated that the state government also had strong support for education and industrialization in the state and had computerized the office of the Accountant General. Prof Iwok said the Association appreciated the appointment of ANAN members to responsible positions in the state cabinet.

He said these positions include the Commissioner for Finance, the State Accountant - General and the State auditor-General.

The ANAN President thanked the state government for sponsorship of three of their members to the World Congress of Accountants in Istanbul, Turkey as well as the sponsorship of indigenes to Nigerian College of Accountancy Jos.

Prof. Iwok also pleaded with the Governor to approve the allocation of land in a suitable location in the state capital to build the Branch Secretariat.

He also requested for the payment of professional allowance to professional Accountants on public service as paid to their professional counterparts such as Doctors, Lawyers, and Teachers.

Prof. Iwok explained that the changing world of technology has made it additionally imperative that professional Accountants reposition themselves to meet new challenges.

"Consequently, our MCPD Programme is designed to sharpen the skills and improve the competence of our members to enable them perform better in their work places and become more useful to their employers, clients and the society.
