The Surabaya-based Sepuluh November Institute is currently conducting a poverty alleviation program in Surabaya under a grant from the British Embassy in Indonesia.
The grant, worth US$20,000, was handed over by British Ambassador Charles Humfrey during his visit to the institute in November last year, said Sukemi, the institute's spokesman.
Sukemi said US$15,000 would be used for poverty alleviation programs, with the remaining $5,000 being earmarked by the institute for socio-cohesiveness activities.
"The grant is not only for training courses for people in poor regions, but also for infrastructure development," he said.
Sukemi said that his institute would report on the effectiveness of the grant by the end of this year.
Under the poverty alleviation program, a drinking water facility will be built in Sukolilo, one of the poorest areas in Surabaya.
